Episode 48– Your Limitless Capacity to Grow

August 31st, 2010 § Leave a Comment

Namaste Dear ones!

I’m back from an eight-day family reunion at the beach (want to keep up with all of these comings and goings, follow me on twitter) and so excited to share a new episode with you.

This class was inspired by Roseanne Cash’s recent interview on NPR’s All Things Considered.  You are more than equipped to handle whatever comes your way. You are so much stronger than you may know at this time.

Connections

Hello hello, my dears! Please do get in touch. Share your yoga stories, ask me yoga questions, or just tell out me who you are and where you practice yoga!  For those of you who have sent emails in the past two weeks, sorry for my delayed response– you are on my mind and I will write back soon!

Ebbing and Flowing

Spending time in the water, particularly the ocean, is so soothing for me. I am instantly calmer, clearer, and more grounded.  My Dosha (Ayurvedic constitution) tends to be Vata (air) and water is one of those elements that has assisted me in dropping down a notch when I need to.

We spent Saturday on Lopez Island (one of Washington’s San Juan Islands), and although I did not even realize I was seeking that grounding force when we began our journey, I knew as soon as I was at home in the sea.  Swimming with my man and my dog, lying in the sun with wave-smoothed stones in my hands, I felt transported deeper into my own being.  And I am so grateful for that.

This summer has been filled with so much joy, and even that can be a bit disorienting.  Thankfully, I found my path back to that strong center.

What’s your path back to center?

We swam to there.
{We swam out to that rock-island. It was a magical place.}

Blessings.

One of the Many Reasons I Teach Yoga

August 4th, 2010 § 1 Comment

The smile on students’ faces as they leave their mat and take that love-peace-contentment out into their worldly interactions.  The air is dense with intention.   The eyes are light with love.  The illusory separations between “you” and “me” have faded away.

It is my intention as a teacher to create a space where students are free to connect yoga to life.  One way we do this is by taking our time between winding-down our physical practice, savasana, and our meditation and chant at the conclusion of practice.  The glacial pace fosters deep connection, inward focus, and intentional action.

Just be YOU!

This post could bear the alternate title “Practicing what I preach, yo!”  In class, I often encourage yogis to listen to their inner guides, to follow their own breath, to bring themselves into each posture.  Well, last week I finally had a chance to practice this myself.

For the past year and a half, I have taught a power vinyasa flow class.  I was encouraged to follow a certain model in this class (quick transitions, no holding postures, lots of sweat).  This went along fine, though I always felt like I was teaching someone else’s class, even though I brought all of my other elements to the class (pranayama, philosophy, subtle-body talk and the like).  And although this style of asana practice is very popular in Seattle, this particular class of mine was not as popular as my mellow-flow classes.  Well, last week I let go of what I thought I “should” do in this class and just taught the way I practice… and you know what?! it was perfect.  Just what students needed, wanted, and enjoyed.

“No kidding,” you might be saying, or “duh,”  but this class just completely opened up for me.

And for that, I am grateful!

Namaste, k
