Episode 65– Sensing Satya

August 23rd, 2011 § 1 Comment

Blessings, dear ones.

Today’s class is an hour-long, all-levels class.  It’s recorded LIVE at one of my hatha flow classes. Our philosophical focus is on Satya– TRUTH– which is the second yama (restraint).  In this podcast, I talk about Eckhart Tolle (author of The Power of Now and A New Earth), quote Meditations From the Mat and play the Shree Guru Gita performed by Kumuda.

Oona and I will be traveling for the next month, so our next podcast will manifest sometime around the Autumnal Equinox.  I’m quite excited to share the equinox with my baby.  How do you mark the changing seasons?

Episode 56– Interwoven Realities

December 2nd, 2010 § Leave a Comment

Blessings, dearies.  I hope my friends here in the United States enjoyed a beautiful Thanksgiving.  We had a bounty of food and fellowship with friends and family alike.  Admitedly, I overdid it a bit for being steps away from my third trimester, but it was *so* worth it.  We are preparing for a move, so podcasts could be a bit light over the next few weeks. Rest assured, though, we will keep posting through the holidays. Just for fun, I thought I’d share a little photo of pregnant ustrasana… pregnant camel.
my humps.

Today’s class is an hour-long, all-levels class focusing on seeing the world through a different perspective. I do hope you love it and THANK you so so much for listening!

Episode 54– Karuna

November 2nd, 2010 § Leave a Comment

Compassion inspired today’s practice.  Whenever I reconnect with compassion, my mind travels to the bumper sticker that reads “Peace begins at home”.  Such is the case with compassion; we must begin by letting go of harsh judgment of ourselves before we give that gift to our fellow travelers on this wheel of life.

This is an all-levels class that lasts about 40 minutes.  We practice some of my favorite yin yoga postures in this episode.

What is yin yoga?

In a word, yin is delicious.  Yin yoga is a Taoist system of yoga that emphasizes our connection to the joints and connective tissue (or fascia) through sustained, passive postures.  Oftentimes, yin postures are held for 30 seconds to 8 minutes (even up to 20 minutes, in some cases) in order for uptimal stretching of the connective tissue.  This modality works with the Chinese medicine system of meridians, and each posture has a particular effect on one or more organs.  In addition to the physical component of sustained holding of passive postures, confronting tension in this way allows us to confront tensions in our minds as well.  You may notice your mind begin to race in any posture once you’ve been there for longer than five breaths.  This is where the real juice of the practice lies– we are able to drop into uncomfortable situations on the mat in order to practice bringing the yoga into difficult situations out there in the world.

If you are interested in learning about yin yoga, I absolutely recommend Sarah Powers’ book Insight Yoga .

Episode 53–Metta Matters

October 21st, 2010 § Leave a Comment

Hello dearies,

We introduced the Brahma Viharas a few weeks ago.  These are concepts I continually go back to in teaching yoga, as they can bring so much more joy to interactions with others and our Selves.  Today’s class focuses on Miatri, Metta, or lovingkindness.  Metta is one of my “deserted island” practices (if I were stranded a la LOST and could only bring 3 practices with me, this would be one of them…definitely).  I do it all the time!  I do hope you love this practice.

Thank you so so much for listening and for your support of the podcast.

Blessings,

Kelly
