I really loved your first video and am looking forward to the days ahead. I am a beginner … I would love more specific tips on how to start a yoga practice. I read so many things about people staying in poses for a long while… concentrating on their breathing and how they are able to release their emotions/stress. For me, I get into a pose (say, warrior pose) and I’m usually thinking “um, ok what is next, what should I be thinking, la la la, what’s for dinner, la la, la, I’m bored” then I give up and roll up the mat. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? I’ve tried yoga classes but it is usually too crowded and I feel the students are there more to get beautifully toned bodies
and I am looking for something more meaningful and deeper. Perhaps I have set too many high expectations of myself?
Keep up the beautiful work…..
Hi Michele,
Thank you so much for visiting and for your comment! I think your expectations are *just right*– yoga is about connecting with something more meainingful– our true nature. The work we do on the mat is just one aspect of that– one way to practice integrating wholeness and mindfulness into our lives off of the yoga mat. One way to begin the process of moving into stillness is to approach each posture in 3 steps: 1) the physical structure of the pose– notice where you connect with the earth, notice the spaces that feel free and those that feel constricted, notice the physical structure you are creating with your body; 2) bring your awareness into your breath– listen to the inhalation and the exhalation, feel what the inhalation and exhalation DO to your body, observe your breath using all of your senses; 3) bring your awareness to your intention– what brings you to yoga? fill your mind with your intention in each posture.
Another way I like to quiet the mind is by silently repeating “Om” on each exhalation. Very powerful.
With gratitude,
Kelly

Hi! I totally googled “Kelly Loves Whales yoga” today which led me to your other blog and then over here. What a fun video blogging challenge. I did my “home practice” for the first time today in a long time and plan on keeping it up so I’m going to have to play catch up with your videos. I linked to this video in my yoga related post today. Thanks for the inspiration!
Hi Sandra!
How wonderful to hear from you and to hear that you’ve re-ignited the fire of your home yoga practice! I am grateful to be a part of that– any requests??
All goodness,
Kelly *)
