On Finding Comfort in Discomfort

Blessings, dear ones.

There will of course be a video post today (it is presently uploading to YouTube), but I have been compelled to write for days and had a bit of inspiration during practice this morning that I wanted to share while it was still fresh in my thoughts.

Part of what we learn to embrace on this yogic path is impermanence.

Things are constantly changing.  All things.  And the less attached we become to the things, the more easily we make our way through this life.  This concept is quite simple when we apply it to tangible, living objects (the apple on the table is decomposing as we speak, for example) and even when we apply it to less-obviously changing tangible objects like computers or jeans (though not decomposing before our eyes, these items could easily break, rip, or get left somewhere).  The trick is remembering impermanence when experiencing discomfort, physically or mentally.  From time to time, I will wake with a feeling of irritability.  My neck hurts from sleeping funny. Everything is annoying.  I have nothing to wear. Perhaps you have been in this position as well.  In those moments, the key is to remember it cannot last forever…even if the external factors (the loud music, the finite number of tops in my closet) remain unchanged.  Simply by remembering this, we initiate change.  Knowing this has radically changed my life.  And the trick is to create space– the moment you become aware that you are thinking crabby thoughts, you are free to create that space.  A wonderful place to begin is by listening to the breath.  My own personal mantra in moments of difficulty comes from “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen.

Because I’m easy come, easy go

Little high, little low

Any way the wind blows

Doesn’t really matter to me.

What are your favorite practices for finding ease in a difficult moment?
